Cat Surrender Information
We thank you for choosing to surrender your animal to the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society. The Western Pennsylvania Humane Society is a not-for-profit organization that is not affiliated with any other Humane Society. We do not receive federal or state operating funds. All funds received are from individual donations and corporate sponsorships. Therefore, we do request a minimum of a $5.00 donation when you surrender an animal, a minimum requested donation of $10.00 for two animals, and a minimum requested donation of $15.00 for three or more animals. This small monetary donation will help defer some of the costs associated with caring for our animals.

    * If you are surrendering your cat/kitten due to behavior, please consider contacting on of our Behavior Consultants. You may reach them at 412-321-4625 X 224. Speaking with them and possibly scheduling a home visit may help keep your animal in your home.

    * If you are surrendering your animal due to behaviors that may be linked to a possible medical issue (urinating in the house, not eating), we suggest you consult a Veterinarian

If surrendering your cat/kitten is the only option, please note:

    * We are an open door shelter that received over 14,000 animals last year. As a result, we do euthanize for behavioral, medical, and space reasons. Our decisions are based on numerous factors when space becomes an issue. You are not required to surrender this cat/kitten to us unless directed by law.

    * Understand that felines have a very high rate of developing URI in a shelter environment. Although we take all precautions to help alleviate this virus, there is a chance your feline will develop URI. We will not adopt felines with visible symptoms of URI.

    * When you leave your cat/kitten with the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society, you are relinquishing all rights to the animal. We will not contact you regarding the disposition or health of the cat/kitten. We direct you to our website, www.wpahumane.org to view all adoptable felines.

    * If a cat is deemed unsafe for adoption, we will not place the cat on our adoption floor.

NOTE: If this animal has bitten within the past 10 days, according to our policies, it must be euthanized and sent to the Health Department. THERE IS AN ADDITIONAL FEE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SERVICE. However, you have the option to quarantine the animal at home for 10 days. After the quarantine period, you can decide to either keep your animal or surrender your pet the Western PA Humane Society.
