Dog Surrender Information
We thank you for choosing to surrender your animal to the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society. The Western Pennsylvania Humane Society is a not-for-profit organization that is not affiliated with any other Humane Society. We do not receive federal or state operating funds. All funds received are from individual donations and corporate sponsorships. Therefore, we do request a minimum of a $5.00 donation when you surrender an animal, a minimum requested donation of $10.00 for two animals, and a minimum requested donation of $15.00 for three or more animals. This small monetary donation will help defer some of the costs associated with caring for our animals.

    * If you are surrendering your dog/puppy due to behavior, please consider contacting one of our Behavior Consultants. You may reach them at 412-321-4625 X 224. Speaking with them and possibly scheduling a home visit may keep your animal in your home.

    * If you are surrendering your animal due to behaviors that may be linked to a possible medical issue (urinating in the house, not eating), we suggest you consult a Veterinarian.

If surrendering your dog/puppy is the only option, please note:

    * We are an open door shelter that received over 14,000 animals last year. As a result, we do euthanize for behavioral, medical, and space reasons. Our decisions are based on numerous factors when space becomes an issue. You are not required to surrender this dog/puppy to us unless directed by law.

    * When you leave your dog/puppy with the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society, you are relinquishing all rights to the animal. We will not call you regarding the disposition or health of the dog/puppy. We direct you to our website, www.wpahumane.org to view all adoptable canines.

    * We evaluate every dog six months or older for behavior and temperament using the SAFER Training Method. For more information on this testing process, please ask to speak with one of our behavior consultants.

    * If a dog is deemed unsafe for adoption, we will not place the dog on our adoption floor.

NOTE: If this animal has bitten within the past 10 days, according to our policies, it must be euthanized and sent to the Health Department. THERE IS AN ADDITIONAL FEE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SERVICE. However, you have the option to quarantine the animal at home for 10 days. After the quarantine period, you can decide to either keep your animal or surrender your pet the Western PA Humane Society.
