These tough economic times have seen a dramatic increase in the number of family pets who are abandoned or surrendered to animal shelters because their families can't afford to feed them. To address this need, the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society has established a program to help families that have fallen on hard times and are struggling to keep their animals and their families intact.
The Western Pennsylvania Humane Society's ELLIE'S PET PANTRY Program supplies members of our local community with food for hungry pets. The program's namesake is Ellie, a courageous Black Lab mix, who was surrendered at a shelter in West Virginia two years ago because she suffers from a seizure disorder. Ellie was adopted by a Pittsburgh attorney with a horse farm, and today she lives a happy and healthy life.
Donations to Ellie's Pet Pantry are urgently needed. If you can help, please deliver donations of canned or dry pet food to the Western PA Humane Society at 1101 Western Avenue, 15233. The Humane Society facility is located on the North Shore. We welcome donations for household animals of any species, including rabbits, ferrets, birds, hamsters and guinea pigs; the program's clientele is not confined to dogs and cats. If you would like to support the program, please click here to make a secure donation on-line, or mail a check made payable to Western PA Humane Society. Write "Ellie's Pet Pantry" on the Memo line and send your check to the Western PA Humane Society.
If you have any questions, email info@wpahumane.org or call 412-321-4625 Option 4, and we would be happy to help!. The need for this program is serious and ongoing. As families struggle with the loss of jobs and other sources of income, your help can make all the difference to sparing children, parents, and the family pet the heartache of separation. Furthermore, this program is a win-win proposition: By keeping the animals in their homes and out of a shelter, the program avoids putting additional stress on our shelter and our limited resources. Thank you for your support!
