Foster Requirements

  • All pets in the household need to be spayed/neutered and current on core vaccines (DHLP or DHLPP and rabies for dogs; FVRCP or FVRCPC and rabies for cats). We check with your veterinarian before approving your foster application to make sure this requirement is met.
  • Foster cats and kittens need to be isolated (in an extra bedroom, bathroom, etc.) from pet cats and kittens.
  • Foster parents need to make a commitment to keep their foster animal for the full estimated duration of foster.
  • Foster parents must agree to medically treat their foster animal/s should they become ill. This is usually very simple; liquid antibiotics for cats and kittens, pills for dogs, eye drops or salve, once or twice a day.
  • We ask foster parents to provide food and litter for their foster animals. At times we may be able to provide these supplies, depending on availability.
  • Foster parents must agree to schedule two-week foster checks, free of charge, at our veterinary clinic, so that we can monitor the progress of our animals.
  • Our experienced clinic staff will provide foster parents with medical and behavioral support for the duration of the foster period.
  • Foster parents must agree to return their foster animal/s to the shelter when they are ready for adoption.
  • Foster parents must agree to follow all foster recommendations and abide by the terms of the Foster Agreement.

To Become A Foster Parent

  1. Complete a Foster Application, available online or at the shelter.
  2. Call or email Jessica Dettling, Director of Volunteer and Foster Programs, to discuss which type of animals you'd like to foster and to schedule training in foster parenting.
  3. If there are no animals in the shelter who meet your foster preferences, we will keep your application on file and call you when an animal needs your foster care.
